What do our experts think of the 2024 Acura MDX? We look at interior quality, powertrain, and more in our Acura MDX review.

What’s New for the 2024 Acura MDX?

Two years after the all-new 4th-gen model debuted, the 2024 Acura MDX arrives with no major changes. Which is just fine as this premium three-row SUV continues to offer ample power – in Type S trim at least – muscular styling and a handsome cabin. Though the MDX has historically lived in the shadow of the BMW, Audi, and Mercedes benchmark luxury SUVs, it also undercuts them on pricing. So, for the savvy buyer, a 2024 MDX offers Honda’s highly-regarded engineering reputation wrapped in an upscale package.

2024 Acura MDX Powertrain 7/10

2024 Acura MDX 3.5L V6 - carsforsale.com
2024 Acura MDX 3.5L V6 - carsforsale.com

Most of the 2024 Acura MDX lineup is powered by a naturally aspirated 3.5L V6 making 290 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque. It’s the same motor found in the last generation MDX and although it delivers smooth power, it’s a bit poky taking 7.5 seconds in the 0-60 mph test per Edmunds testing. A 10-speed automatic routes power to the front wheels or all four with the optional Super Handling AWD (SH-AWD) system that adds $2,200 to the bottom line.

Fortunately, the Type S powertrain is available for those in need of more verve. These MDX models pack a turbocharged 3.0L V6 turned up to 355 hp and 354 torques. The same transmission is on hand and SH-AWD is standard on these variants. Between the jump in power and traction of AWD, the Type S can hit 60 mph some two seconds faster than base models.

With great power, however, comes not-great efficiency as evidenced by the Type S fuel economy figures of 17 mpg in city driving and 24 on the highway. And the base powertrain doesn’t do much better, earning 19 mpg around town and 26 on the highway with one less highway mpg for AWD models.

For reference, the base AWD BMW X5 that comes with MDX Type S levels of power boasts a rating of 23 mpg in city driving. As for towing, the 2024 MDX can handle 3,500 pounds in FWD form or 5,000 pounds with the SH-AWD system regardless of powertrain.

2024 Acura MDX Interior 8/10

Every 2024 Acura MDX comes with three rows capable of seating seven passengers. The third row is best for kids, but the center second-row seat can be removed for easier access back there. No matter which of the six models you go with, the cabin is a posh place to spend time.

Only base models come with leatherette upholstery, the rest of the lineup features genuine leather with French-stitched leather-wrapped dash panels, open-pore wood trim, and bronze-colored brushed aluminum trim available. For those interested in serious swagger, check out the Azurite Blue leather upholstery reserved for Type S Advance models.

The cabin on the last generation MDX was one reason it landed on our list of best used luxury SUVs and the 2024 model follows suit. But the new MDX goes further by offering even more cargo space. Fold the second and third rows flat to open up 71.4 cubic feet of storage volume. There are 39.1 cubes behind the second row and 16.3 cu-ft in the wayback.

There’s also an underfloor storage bin in the cargo bay and ample space in the doors and center console for odds and ends. As for comfort, Acura loads the 2024 MDX with standard niceties like Active Sound Control, acoustic laminated front glass, triple-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, and a panoramic moonroof.

2024 Acura MDX Technology Features 7/10

Acura goes against the current automotive norms by fitting the 2024 MDX with an infotainment screen that is controlled by a touchpad on the center console, which may take some getting used to. Fortunately, the screen is large at 12.3 inches and sits next to a same-sized digital gauge cluster.

Wireless Apple and Android integration is standard as is a Wi-Fi hotspot, wireless charging pad, and AcuraLink Connected Services. Navigation and increasingly potent audio systems are available as you move up the trim ladder, capped by a 25-speaker ELS Studio setup on the Type S Advance model.

AcuraWatch, the automaker’s suite of advanced driver aids, is standard on the 2024 MDX. It includes forward collision mitigation, adaptive cruise control, a lane-keeping system, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and traffic sign recognition. A surround-view monitor (SVM) and head-up warning are available on higher-spec models. Also standard is eight airbags, all of which help the 2024 Acura MDX earn a 5-Star overall rating from the NHTSA and Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS – the top ratings from both safety agencies.

Type S – $69,345

The Type S models come exclusively with the 355-horse turbocharged powertrain that is bolstered with Brembo brakes, an adaptive air suspension, and additional sport-oriented drive modes. But the available Tiger Eye Pearl paint job is perhaps the most exciting feature of these three-row hot rods.

Type S Advance – $74,695

Sitting atop the 2024 MDX hierarchy is the Type S Advance. It packs the big motor along with 21-inch rims, massaging front seats, available dark blue leather upholstery, a 25-speaker audio extravaganza, head-up display, and SVM.

2024 Acura MDX Overall Value

From a value perspective, the 2024 MDX bests nearly all competition regardless of trim level. A new Volvo XC90 with its gorgeous cabin starts at $57,000 and the BMW X5 comes in far higher at $66,000. So really, you can choose the model that speaks to you (but you should drive the Type S) without worry of overspending.

Though there is nothing new for the MDX in 2024, the warranty was bolstered when the 2023 model added two years of complimentary maintenance. The basic warranty runs for a 4-year/50,000-mile term and the powertrain is covered for six years or 70,000 miles.

Overall Value is actually the 2024 Acura MDX’s middle name. Or at least it should be. The base powertrain is wanting for a hybrid system to boost power and efficiency and the infotainment system is fiddly, but that’s ok because we’d be driving a Type S variant with no power issues.

And for the relatively low pricing – compared to the German contingent – we could get used to a touchpad over a touchscreen. While you’re at it, tick the boxes for Tiger Eye Pearl paint and Azurite Blue leather.
