The 2022 Hyundai Accent is an economical subcompact sedan that gives back at the pump and offers no thrills or frills.

What’s New for the 2022 Hyundai Accent?

The 2022 Hyundai Accent only comes with one major change: the six-speed manual transmission has been dropped from the lineup and all trims now come standard with a continuously variable automatic transmission. The 2022 model is the end of the road for this compact sedan as Hyundai has announced that it will not be making the Accent any longer.

2022 Hyundai Accent Powertrain

All models of the 2022 Hyundai Accent are powered by a 120-horsepower 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is the only drivetrain option available. It takes about 8.5 seconds to go from zero to 60 mph which is average for this class.

The Accent is better suited for the city streets, but highway driving isn’t out of the question—just be patient as merging and passing will take some effort. Steering is light but not disengaged, it is stable in turns, and the suspension does an adequate job of absorbing most bumps.

The Honda Civic might be a good alternative if you want more engine options. Check out our new vs used Honda Civic comparison.

2022 Hyundai Accent Fuel Economy & MPG

The Accent will have you smiling at the pump with its better-than-average fuel economy. It gets an estimated 33 mpg in the city and 41 mpg on the highway.

This is identical to its rival the Kia Rio. Check out our head-to-head comparison of the Hyundai Accent vs. Kia Rio to see how they stack up in other categories.

Interior, Comfort, & Cargo Space

The Accent offers a no-nonsense interior with seats that are comfortable for short drives, but not supportive enough for longer treks. This is to be expected in a compact economy car, as is the hard plastics throughout and lack of customization and accommodation for taller drivers. Wide door openings make for easy entry and exit, but headroom is at a premium in the rear seat.

The Accent is average for its class in cargo capacity offering 13.7 cubic feet of storage space. There are 60/40-split folding rear seats, but they do not fold completely flat, which limits what you can actually haul.

If you need more cargo space than the Accent can offer you may want to check out our review of the 2022 Nissan Kicks. We also did a lineup of the best used hatchback cars if a five-door ride is more your thing.

Entertainment & Technology

Entertainment and technology features in the Accent are about as basic as they come. The 5.0-inch touchscreen that is standard on the base SE model only controls AM/FM radio and music from external devices using Bluetooth, USB, or the auxiliary jack.

Sound is unimpressive from the four-speaker audio system, and we found that the USB port lacks the power needed to charge phones in a reasonable amount of time. Higher trims get a 7.0-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, a six-speaker audio system, and two additional USB ports.

Safety Features

The 2022 Hyundai Accent earned an overall safety rating of four out of five stars from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Standard driver assistance features are sparse on the Accent and only include a rearview camera, while the top-level Limited trim gets you forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking.

Warranties

Hyundai offers an impressive warranty coverage, only rivaled by Kia. The accent is covered by a 5 year or 60,000 miles limited warranty and a 10 year or 100,000 miles powertrain warranty. Trumping Kia, the Accent offers 3 years or 36,000 miles of complimentary scheduled maintenance.

What we think

2022 Hyundai Accent - hyundaiusa.com

There aren’t many players left in the subcompact game, and the Hyundai Accent is fading fast. While we don’t expect much from a small economy car, we do feel like the Accent is behind the times where safety and convenience features are concerned. We’d have to go with the Limited trim to not feel like we’re totally sacrificing, but we’re glad it’s still getting the fuel economy you’d expect from this class all while keeping prices low.
