This smaller Lexus NX leans heavily toward comfort and practicality and advanced technology. We review interior, powertrain options, and more here.

What’s New for the 2024 Lexus NX?

The Lexus NX is the brand’s bridge between the larger RX and the smaller UX crossover. It’s full of advanced technology and available with four different engines among six different trim levels. For 2024, the NX gets a panoramic sunroof for the F Sport version, new interior trim color-keyed elements, and a remote parking system for some trims.

2024 Lexus NX Powertrain 7.5/10

There’s a powertrain for just about every mid-size crossover buyer in the NX lineup. Things kick off with a very sluggish but fuel-efficient 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 203 hp. It’s seriously dull to drive but it does get up to 26 mpg in the city and 33 on the highway according to the EPA. It’s also the only NX that comes standard with front-wheel drive though AWD is available. That same engine is paired to an electric motor in the NX350h and makes 239 hp. In that form, it gets 41 mpg in the city and 37 on the highway.

Then, there are the fun NX models like the 350 which comes with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 275 hp. It’s the most powerful non-electrified NX and it’s the most fun in our opinion as it benefits from a conventional 8-speed automatic transmission. The hybrids all use the same continuously variable transmission which dulls the experience a great deal. Still, none of the NX models, even the F Sport variants can hold a candle to seriously performance-oriented options like the BMW X1 M35i or the Audi SQ3.

Nevertheless, Lexus makes an effort with the 450h+ and 450h+ F Sport which both use the same plug-in hybrid engine from the Toyota RAV4 Prime. It makes 302 hp and can rocket from 0-60 mph in less than six seconds. Despite that quick straight-line speed we’d still have just about any other SUV in this segment for the hefty $59k+ price tag that one must pay for the 450h+. The point of the NX is to be comfortable and it does that great. The 450h+ also gets up to 37 miles of all-electric range and 84 MPGe combined.

2024 Lexus NX Interior 9/10

We loved the interior of the NX last year and still do considering that basically nothing major has changed. The asymmetrical design is eye-catching and highly modern. What has changed is that Lexus added a few more surfaces that include matching trim colors and that only improves what was already a good design. The tight panel gaps, excellent switchgear, and attractive mix of physical and touchscreen buttons continue to be an attractive combination of features.

The seats are comfortable and supportive without being overly cushioned or stiff. The sport seats on the F Sport models benefit from a lot more lateral bolstering without giving up nice features like heating or ventilation. Rear seat headroom is a bit iffy for taller adults but that’s true of just about every SUV in this segment. Some models benefit from heated rear seats as well.

If there’s anything that isn’t above average in the NX cabin it’s the standard 22.7 cubic feet of storage space behind the second row. Thankfully, those seats fold down and offer 46.7 cubic feet at that stage.

2024 Lexus NX Technology Features 8/10

Every NX comes with a lot of technology that we like. Most models get a 9.8-inch infotainment system and 10 speakers. The user interface itself is a huge step forward from some other Lexus models that still employ a trackpad. It’s reasonably fast to respond to touches, well laid out, and is also controllable through a fairly reliable voice command system. Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are also standard across the lineup.

Upper level trims benefit from a larger 14-inch infotainment system which looks a lot better in the NX dash but isn’t necessarily a huge step forward in terms of functionality. There are some features that we really do love though like an available heads-up display, a wireless charging pad, and a 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio system.

In terms of safety tech, the NX also scores highly. Every trim gets Lexus Safety System 3.0, a suite with valuable features like adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, road sign assist, forward collision mitigation, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high beams.

2024 Lexus NX 350 F Sport - lexus.com
2024 Lexus NX 350 F Sport - lexus.com

NX350 F Sport – $49,165

Consider this the first “sporty” NX as it loses the roof rails and goes back to the 2.4-liter engine while also gaining G-force and turbo boost displays as well as an adaptive variable suspension and a bunch of small F Sport design cues adjustments.

NX450h+ – $59,405

This NX uses the 302 hp plug-in hybrid powertrain mentioned above. It includes a 3.3 kW onboard charger as well as a 14-inch infotainment system, a power liftgate, unique 20-inch wheels, rain-sensing wipers, a sunroof, door courtesy lamps, a heated steering wheel, driver’s seat memory settings, heated and ventilated front seats, and open-pore wood trim.

2024 Lexus NX450h+ F Sport - pressroom.lexus.com
2024 Lexus NX450h+ F Sport - pressroom.lexus.com

NX450h+ F Sport – $60,665

This is as athletic as the NX gets thanks to a slew of F Sport adjustments like sport seats, aluminum pedals, a G-force gauge, an energy monitor display, and an adaptive variable suspension.

2024 Lexus NX Overall Value 8.5/10

The Lexus NX offers outstanding safety equipment that really matters to buyers in this segment. That focus on practicality over performance is also evident in the fact that the NX comes with a competitive four-year or 50,000-mile limited warranty in concert with a six-year or 70,000-mile powertrain warranty and up to a year or 10,000 miles of complimentary maintenance. All of that is great but Lexus wants a pretty penny for the NX so a certified pre-owned example might be a better value.

The Lexus NX leans into a focus on comfort above all else and that’s worthy of applause. Sure, cars like the BMW X1 M35i and Audi SQ3 are more fun to drive but let’s face it, this is a family car and the rest of the family benefits from the features that make the Lexus more comfortable.
