We’ll have to wait to see how the upcoming Hummer EV and the Tesla Cybertruck do but for right now, there’s not a production truck on Earth that’s as fast as the Rivian R1T. Rivian boasts 800-horsepower and 900 ft-lbs of torque thanks to its quad-motor platform. It’ll rip from 0-60 in just three seconds and that’s faster than both the big dinos Ford’s Raptor and RAM’s TRX. Beyond that it’s nearly just as impressive with solid marks for consistent and easy to modulate pedals and good steering feedback.

The ride itself is great too and while we love it, we do wonder how reliable those air shocks will end up being in the future. If they can hold up, the R1T will always be a winner when it comes to ride quality and comfort. The only down side of a truck like this, something that will apply to every EV truck coming out soon, is that it’s incredibly heavy. That might not sound like a big deal but consider how it would feel to off-road this thing when teetering on the edge of a rock feature. It stops just fine but there’s no getting around the fact that it’s hauling more than 7,000 pounds around so it needs a little extra space.

Towing & Payload

The 2022 Rivian R1T can haul around 11,000-pounds so there’s no shortage of stuff you can pull. Keep in mind that range will be diminished and we have yet to real-world test the R1T to find out by how much.

2022 Rivian Battery Range

Despite that huge weight rating, the Rivian R1T can still drive more than 300-miles on a single charge and that’s outstanding. It will certainly help to reduce some of the range anxiety that some users experience. Rivian also says that two more battery pack options are on their way to offer a little less and a little more range in future trims.

Interior, Comfort, & Cargo Space

The 2022 Rivian R1T is a slick pickup inside. Firstly though it’s hard not to notice that it’s smaller than one might expect. This is, after-all, a mid-size pickup so don’t expect a full-size interior space. Still, it’s comfortable and even suits tall drivers nicely. In fact, we personally think that it’s a lot more practical in terms of size than any of the mainstream gas-powered rigs. The ride itself is nice but the seats are really impressive on their own too. Multiple adjustments provide more than enough flexibility for long trips and even the seats in back are well appointed.

Despite being the very first production vehicle to come out of Rivian, the R1T is very well put together and beautifully built. The fit and finish feels appropriate for the price point and the materials themselves do too. It should also be noted how cool it is to see the way Rivian uses its space. The Gear Tunnel gets a lot of love and it should. It’s highly adaptable and offers a secure place to store stuff other than the cabin. Get an R1T with the locking bed cover and you’ll have three different spots like that including the tunnel and the front trunk.

Let’s also take a moment to give kudos to the R1T for being a proper off-roader. It might not look like a hardcore rock-crawler but we’ve seen it scale walls and trails that scare much more burly looking rigs. The off-road mode has a lot to do with it but this truck also has the strong backbone and DNA to do the job.

2022 Rivian R1T Entertainment & Technology

There’s some great tech in the Rivian R1T and really only one big disappointment. There is no way to use Android Auto or Apple CarPlay with this otherwise futuristic truck. Rivian has created its own interface and while we like it as a whole, it would be a lot better if it had Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The rest of the user interface is top-notch. This truck will calculate the total range remaining based on the drive mode that the driver has selected. It’s not just using drive mode either, it can adapt to specific driver’s habits and provide an updated estimate of range.

The giant touchscreen is lovely too and responds fast and accurately. We really like that the truck has real buttons for multiple functions which might sound redundant for such a tech-heavy truck but it’s nice to just flip a switch or smash a button and be done. We also love all of the ways that Rivian caters to adventure seekers. There are power ports everywhere. There’s a Bluetooth speaker that’s designed to be removed and then used for tailgating or camping. Want to go off-road? Great, there’s a mode that can lift the truck more than 10 inches at the push of a button. Oh, and there’s an on-board air compressor so you can deflate tires for the trail and then air them back up when you get back to the road.

Safety Features

Every Rivian comes with adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and forward collision mitigation. The NHTSA nor the IIHS have yet tested the R1T but we’ll be back here to update when that happens.

What we think

2022 Rivian R1T - netcarshow.com

There might not be another production vehicle on the planet that can do everything the 2022 Rivian R1T can do as easily as it does it. For that reason it might be worth six figures or more but it’s much less than that. A person in theory could get one of these tomorrow, then spend the day rock crawling over serious trails only to smoke supercars on the way home.
