The 2022 Toyota Camry sedan continues its reign of reliable and value-oriented mobility with a few more standard features and great fuel economy.

What’s New for the 2022 Toyota Camry?

After receiving a significant update in 2021, the 2022 Toyota Camry is light on changes. Among the most notable is the addition of dual-zone automatic climate control, illuminated mirrors in the sunshades, and selectable driving modes across the entire trim lineup.

2022 Toyota Camry Powertrain

Across the range, the 2022 Toyota Camry can be different things for different people. The base 2.5L four-cylinder engine is a bit buzzy and unrefined, but it’s still stronger than many rivals. The 8-speed automatic transmission is smooth and doesn’t provide any reason for complaint. The hybrid is stronger than many counterparts and still manages to be incredibly efficient, so no concern there. The Camry’s 3.5L V6 engine is an animal, but it deserves to have better claws.

Both four-cylinder drivetrains feature steering that feels very numb and lifeless most of the time. The V6 feels better, but it might only be due to the abundance of torque steer that adds more life to the wheel in your hands. Toyota would do very well to at least provide the option of all-wheel drive, but that’s only available paired to the four-cylinder engine.

Beyond the odd feeling in the steering wheel, the 2022 Toyota Camry still isn’t a sports sedan. The TRD has a special suspension which does help quite a lot, but at its heart, this is a Camry. It’s not about going fast, it’s about being comfortable and it does that just fine. Braking is standard for the class and provides good enough feedback and modularity for everyday driving.

2022 Toyota Camry Fuel Economy & MPG

2022 Toyota Camry - toyota.com
2022 Toyota Camry - toyota.com

The 2022 Toyota Camry is a sedan that can score fantastic economy scores regardless of trim or powertrain, but it gets seriously special when equipped with a hybrid engine. The V6 gets 22 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. The base four-cylinder reaches 28 mpg in the city and 39 mpg on the highway, but the hybrid goes the extra mile, literally. It can get as good as 51 mpg in the city and 53 mpg on the highway.

Interior, Comfort, & Cargo Space

It’s hard not to like the 2022 Toyota Camry from the cabin. It’s spacious, comfortable, and ergonomically well laid out. Road noise is a bit on the heavy side, but those who opt for the sportier trims might not find that too unappealing. It’s nice to see an almost Lexus-Esque dash layout make its way into the Camry as well. We love the sloping angular design that feels special compared to some rivals like the Accord or the Malibu.

Other creature comforts are well done too. Visibility is great with very little cause for complaint. The climate controls are simple, physical controls that work well and don’t require the user to select multiple menus on the touchscreen. Headroom and legroom are also great throughout the cabin, including in the rear seats. Storage in the trunk is about average and thanks to split-folding rear seats, longer objects can be moved in a pinch.

Entertainment & Technology

The infotainment system in the 2022 Toyota Camry is a breeze to use and requires very little time to understand. The interface is clear and simple and responds quickly to touches. We also really love the graphics. The driver information display is a bit less configurable than we’d like, but the larger unit is very good. We love the integration of Android, Apple, and Amazon assistance as well.

In terms of driver assistance aids, Toyota Safety Sense is in version 2.5 at this point. It’s one of the best with great feedback to help drivers stay in their lane, adds adaptive cruise control, and provides forward collision mitigation.

Safety Features

Toyota has really led the way when it comes to safety, and the 2022 Toyota Camry is no different. It scored a Top Safety Pick+ evaluation from the IIHS and a five-star crash test rating from the NHTSA. Combine those accolades with its Toyota Safety Sense and you have yourself a winner.

2022 Toyota Camry LE Hybrid - carsforsale.com
2022 Toyota Camry LE Hybrid - carsforsale.com

LE – $26,320

The lowest level 2022 Toyota Camry comes with great standard equipment. Under the hood is a 203 horsepower engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission driving the front wheels. All four-cylinder Camry models can be equipped with all-wheel drive. The base LE trim also gets LED headlights, dual-zone automatic climate control, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and a 7-inch infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Every Camry gets adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, automatic high-beams, road sign recognition, and forward-collision mitigation.

Aside from the TRD model, each trim level can be outfitted with a 208 horsepower hybrid engine for just a shade over $2,000. For the most part, trim levels share the same standard features. Depending on the trim level, some small changes to standard trim might apply. For instance, the LE Hybrid gets 16-inch wheels instead of the 17-inch wheels on the gas-powered LE, and Hybrid models get an additional drive mode (EV) over gas-powered cars. Hybrid cars cannot be equipped with all-wheel-drive.

SE – $27,860

The SE or Sport Edition gets some athletic aesthetics in the form of a leather-wrapped steering wheel with paddle shifters, 18-inch wheels, and SE-specific exterior trim. It also comes with a sport-tuned suspension, automatic climate control, and faux leather upholstery. An “SE Nightshade” trim level is also available but adds nothing more than trim-specific 18-inch wheels, a trunk-mounted spoiler, and black exterior trim.

2022 Toyota Camry XLE - toyota.com
2022 Toyota Camry XLE - toyota.com

XLE – $31,070

Consider the XLE as the luxurious version of the Camry. It gets a larger 9-inch infotainment system, leather upholstery, keyless entry and ignition, heated front seats, a power-adjustable passenger seat, wireless device charging, and a larger driver information display. It also gets a more advanced adaptive cruise control system that can come to a full stop before continuing and a blind-spot monitoring system.

2022 Toyota Camry XSE - pressroom.toyota.com
2022 Toyota Camry XSE - pressroom.toyota.com

XSE – $31,620

The XSE is built for a bit more vigorous driving with a sport-tuned suspension, 19-inch wheels, dual exhaust, a gloss black grille, and get this, 3 more horsepower. It keeps all the luxury goodies from the XLE too.

2022 Toyota Camry TRD - toyota.com
2022 Toyota Camry TRD - toyota.com

TRD – $33,385

The 2022 Toyota Camry TRD might sound like an oxymoron to many gearheads, but it’s no slouch. It is only available with the 301 horsepower V6, so the all-wheel drive is off the table. Nevertheless, it also gets a unique sport-tuned suspension, a sports exhaust, aerodynamic exterior bodywork, 19-inch wheels, and TRD-specific trim and interior finishes.

Warranties

Toyota offers a pretty basic 3-year or 36,000-mile limited warranty in unison with a 5-year or 60,000-mile powertrain warranty. It also offers two years or 24,000 miles of complimentary maintenance on all 2022 Toyota Camry models.
