What’s New for the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee ?
On sale for 30 years now, a history we dive into here, the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee was all-new with last year’s model, which kicked off the fifth generation. Available with a pair of gas-powered motors or a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) setup that Jeep calls “4xe”, the Grand Cherokee is better than ever with more configurations that you can shake a stick at.
For 2023, Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk models come only in 4xe guise and the rocking 19-speaker McIntosh stereo can be ordered as a stand-alone option on top models.

2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee Powertrain
Chrysler’s venerable Pentastar 3.6L V6 is the base motor on the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee, making 293 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Or you can select the brawny 5.7L V8 with its 375 horses and 390 torques, available on Overland and Summit models.
A recent addition is the 4xe PHEV configuration – which is sold with 4WD only – that blends a turbocharged 2.0L inline-4 with a pair of electric motors and battery pack to the tune of 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. Regardless of propulsion, all Grand Cherokees work with an 8-speed automatic to spin the rear wheels.
Of course, being a Jeep, 4WD is not just an afterthought– there are three different systems to choose from. Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II, or Quadra-Drive II. Each offers increasingly impressive off-road skills, the latter of which includes an air suspension that enables nearly 11-inches of ground clearance.
Step up to the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe and you can wade through 24 inches of water thanks to high-mount air intakes and specialized sealing. Towing & Payload
The base 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee can tow 6,200 pounds, which is respectable. Step up the V8 and that figure balloons to 7,200 pounds, while the 4xe is capable of an even 6,000 pounds. With the standard V6 powertrain, you can expect fuel economy of 19 mpg around town and 26 on the highway in RWD or 4WD models. The 23-gallon gas tank means a nearly 600-mile highway range. Opting for the 5.7L V8 brings standard 4WD and a significant penalty at the pumps with ratings of 14/22 mpg in city/highway driving. 4xe Grand Cherokees can run up to 25 miles on electric power and earn a rating of 56 MPGe with their PHEV setup.
Interior, Comfort, & Cargo Space
The Grand Cherokee is both spacious, with 38-inches of rear legroom and 70.8 cubic feet of cargo volume with the rear seat folded, and luxurious as you move through the deep pool of trim lines. Much of this helps the big Jeep earn the #1 spot on this list of Best Midsize SUVs. Strictly a two-row affair with five seats, though Jeep does sell a separate three-row version, the 2023 Grand Cherokee comes upholstered in leather on every model except the base Laredo that is trimmed in cloth.
Top models boast Palermo leather-lined thrones with 16-way adjustability, heat, ventilation, and even massaging up front. Rear passengers can also enjoy fully climatized cushions however, expect to pay nearly $70,000 for such amenities. Dual-zone automatic climate control is standard but quad-zone is available as is a panoramic sunroof, acoustic lamination on all glass, noise cancellation tech, and customizable LED cabin lighting. Tack on the wood trim, Berber floor mats, and illuminated door sill plates found on Summit models and above, and you might think you’re sitting in a Cadillac.
Entertainment & Technology
Like the luxury amenities, Jeep doesn’t skimp when it comes to Grand Cherokee tech. An 8.4-inch infotainment touchscreen is standard with a 10.1-inch version available. Wireless connection for Apple CarPlay and Android is also included across the lineup, though you’ll need at least a Limited to access built-in navigation with live traffic details.
Other high-end options include a color head-up display, digital rearview mirror, passenger-side dashboard infotainment screen, wireless charging pad, and night vision. Last but not least is the audiophile special, a custom McIntosh audio system with a whopping 19 speakers, an amplifier, and a 10-inch subwoofer. It’ll run you $1,875 as a stand-alone option but is included in the Summit Reserve.
Safety Features
Every 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee comes with a robust suite of advanced safety nets including adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automated emergency braking, lane keeping, and blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. Automatic high beams are included on the Limited and above, but the slickest stuff requires a package or Summit model. Highlights include semi-autonomous active driving assist, park assist that handles steering for parallel parking maneuvers, and a night-vision camera that can identify animals and people.

The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee has something for everyone, from a relatively inexpensive Laredo that is reasonably trail-ready out of the box to the holy-moly luxurious Summit Reserve. A plug-in hybrid for environmentally-concerned folk or a burbling beast of a V8 for the Fast N’ Loud crowd. Technology up the wazoo and the latest advanced safety – including semi-autonomous driving tech – make the Grand Cherokee an all-around solid SUV.
