What’s New for the 2023 Jeep Grand Wagoneer?

The 2023 Jeep Grand Wagoneer gets a few small changes with big results. First, the inline-six Hurricane engine is standard across almost the entire range. That includes the new L version with a longer wheelbase and more cargo space. On top of that, the Obsidian package is now available on the top-end Series III trim.

2023 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Powertrain

The biggest news regarding the Grand Wagoneer for 2023 is the introduction of the 3-liter Hurricane inline-six across the entire long-wheelbase lineup. It produces 510 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque and sends that to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. It’s downright quick and hides the fact that this is a three-ton SUV when accelerating on the highway. The 6.4-liter V8 from last year is now only available on the base GW and the Series II Obsidian package and it’s still good but the inline-six is the way to go, we think.

The only real downside of the Grand Wagoneer is a tendency towards body roll that shows up on uneven pavement, during quick lane changes, and in poor road conditions. In addition, due to its size and weight, it can be a bit unwieldy in parking lots or other confined spaces. On the highway is where it’s the happiest. The cabin is quiet, the gear changes are smooth, and driver visibility is decent too.

Towing & Payload

The Jeep Grand Wagoneer can tow up to 9,850 pounds when properly equipped. Interestingly, only the normal Wagoneer, not the L, can pull that much weight. That’s because it’s only possible with the V8, which isn’t available in the L. The Hurricane inline-six only loses 100 pounds on that rating though with a maximum towing capacity of 9,750 pounds.

2023 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Fuel Economy & MPG

Moving a vehicle of this size requires energy and to that end, the Grand Wagoneer isn’t what most would call a fuel-sipper. The V8 gets up to 13 mpg in the city and 19 on the highway according to the EPA. The inline-six does a bit better with figures of 15 and 21 respectively. That’s impressive considering that it offers better economy and more power and torque.

Interior, Comfort, & Cargo Space

To put it simply, no Jeep in history has ever come close to offering the level of comfort and quality as the 2023 Grand Wagoneer. Firstly, the captain’s chairs in the first two rows are supremely comfortable, supportive, and highly adjustable. The front seats feature a massaging function and all four front seats can be equipped with ventilation too. In keeping with the theme, the third row is actually big enough for adults to fit in and there’s space in the back for all your things. More on that shortly.

What’s perhaps most impressive about the Grand Wagoneer is that while space itself is pretty easy to provide, the fit-and-finish of the interior takes more time and attention. The panel gaps are tight, the materials are luxurious, and the design is modern too. Small touches like the suspension that can lower when the SUV is in park make getting in and out easier and add a layer of class not normally found in a Stellantis product. Granted, with a starting price of $89,995, these sorts of features feel appropriate.

It’s worthy of special mention that the Grand Wagoneer L includes over 44 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row and up to 112.9 cubic feet with the seats folded down. That’s a serious improvement over the already spacious normal version with its 27 cubic feet of storage and 94 with the seats down.

Entertainment & Technology

Very few cars on the market today can rival the Jeep Grand Wagoneer regarding entertainment and technology. It’s right up there with the very best in the business including Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and others. Jeep accomplishes that through the use of up to 75 inches worth of screen space. Displays with Amazon’s Fire TV are available for the front passenger and each of the second-row passengers.

Those are in addition to the standard 12-inch infotainment system and the 10.3-inch screen used for climate control functions. On top of all that, Jeep offers a heads-up display to complement the already great digital gauge cluster. Still, screen space isn’t enough to automatically make this system a winner. The inclusion of UConnect 5, the latest and greatest of user interfaces from Stellantis, puts the cherry on top of an excellent package. A 23-speaker McIntosh Stereo is available too.

Safety Features

Neither the NHTSA nor the IIHS has released safety data about the 2023 Jeep Grand Wagoneer. Thankfully, Jeep equips this large SUV with an extensive suite of safety-related features and driver aids. That includes forward collision mitigation, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and more. Frankly, it makes cars like the GMC Yukon look outdated in this department.

2023 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Trims & Pricing

Jeep sells the Grand Wagoneer in two wheelbase sizes, regular and L or Long. Despite the change in length, the actual trim features are almost identical but we’ll note a few differences below.

Warranties

The Jeep Grand Wagoneer comes with a three-year or 36,000-mile limited warranty. The powertrain is covered for five years or 60,000 miles. Jeep also provides complimentary maintenance for three years regardless of how many miles one puts on the Grand Wagoneer. That’s above average for the segment all thanks to complimentary maintenance. Otherwise, it’s a pretty basic package.

What We Think

There’s no getting around the fact that the Grand Wagoneer is an incredibly expensive vehicle. That and its low fuel economy numbers should be considered before purchase. When compared to rivals it’s one of the best when it comes to interior space, interior quality, tech features, safety features, and outright capability.

Those who can’t quite swing the cost could look at the cheaper Wagoneer as an option. For those with the budget to house a Grand Wagoneer, we can’t help but recommend it. Just be sure to check out our list of new car incentives before you sign the paperwork.
