What do our experts think of the 2022 Porsche Cayenne? We look at powertrain, interior options, trim levels, and more. Find out our thoughts here.
Porsche hasn’t changed much about the normal 2022 Cayenne. It’s added Android Auto connectivity and refined the voice control and command system to respond more quickly and more naturally. On the Coupe side, a new Turbo GT model joins the lineup with a turbocharged V8 that makes 631-horsepower.

An SUV with Porsche flair and performance
Typically when we’re testing a large SUV or crossover the sports car lovers among us sigh and groan a bit. That’s not the case when the Porsche Cayenne gets put into the queue no matter what year it’s from. The 2022 model year continues to honor the history of both Porsche and the Cayenne badge itself. From the noise that each engine makes to the way they accelerate, swap gears, and stop, they’re a cut above the rest in the segment.
Chuck the Cayenne into a corner at high speed and you’ll likely notice that you’re capable of going a lot faster than practically any other car in the segment. This SUV manages to find grip and keep body roll to a minimum at the same time. And it does that while providing exceptional feedback through the steering wheel and pedals. There’s never any question about what the car is experiencing on the road surface and it allows for deft subtle control.
It used to be that the only way to beat the driving experience in the Cayenne with another SUV was to go full bonkers and land in a Lamborghini Urus (which uses the same drivetrain as the Cayenne btw). Now though, the Cayenne Coupe GT Turbo makes nearly as much power and has proven itself quicker in multiple independent tests.
Considering all of its sporting prowess it might be easy to forget that the Cayenne can tow quite a bit as well. It’ll max out with 7,700-pounds behind it which is on par or better than many others in the segment.
The Cayenne is only recently learning how to sip fuel. With that in mind, it should be no surprise that most models get less than 20 mpg combined according to the EPA. If you need more than that you’ll need to look at either of the e-Hybrid models which get 42 MPGe (Turbo S) and 46 MPGe (Base) respectively.
The Cayenne puts on a master class when it comes to fit and finish. This SUV provides a solid door thunk when you close each door and offers satisfying tactile sensations when you use the switchgear throughout the cabin. We love the way the interior looks too. It’s futuristic and special without limiting visibility or being too aggressive on its own.
All five seats in the Cayenne are comfortable and offer adjustability. Keep in mind that there’s no three-row version of this SUV so if that’s what you need, you’ll be better off looking at something like the Audi Q7 or the Volvo XC90. To that same point, cargo space in the Cayenne is limited. Not only does it lack some of the small cubbies and storage pockets of rivals, but the rear cargo area is smaller than most others too.
Still, for those that don’t plan on needing those cargo and passenger features as much, the Cayenne is incredibly comfortable. Ride quality is outstanding as well but could be a touch firm for some passengers.
Technology is woven into every major system of the Cayenne from the way that it handles to the way that you change the radio station. A large 12.3-inch infotainment system is standard across the lineup and the gauge cluster is made up of two identical 7-inch screens that flank the rev-counter. All systems are easy to learn and to use in practice and thanks to some refinements for the 2022 model year, voice commands work better than ever before.
We also like the optional entertainment package which adds a pair of 10-inch screens to the rear headrest of the front seats for rear passengers to use. Porsche also offers two different premium audio systems including one from Bose with 14 speakers and another from Burmester with 21 speakers.
Every Cayenne comes with forward-collision warning and parking sensors both fore and aft. Lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise are all available for an additional cost. For the money, we’d like to see a lot more of these as standard equipment. Neither the NHTSA nor the IIHS has released safety scores for the Cayenne yet.
The standard Cayenne starts buyers off with a 335-horsepower turbocharged V6. It also gets 19-inch wheels, LED headlights, dual-zone automatic climate control, ambient interior lighting, a power liftgate, power-adjustable front seats, and a 12.3-inch infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity as well as navigation. In terms of safety equipment, the Cayenne gets front and rear parking sensors as well as forward-collision warning. Buyers can choose to add several additional features to the entire lineup during the customization process. A coupe body style is available on all trims. It’s more than half an inch lower than the regular Cayenne and has its own special suspension settings.
The e-Hybrid pairs an electric motor with the base V6 to offer 455-horsepower and 17 miles of all-electric range. Porsche also adds its active suspension package as well as its Sport Chrono package with more performance settings to the e-Hybrid as standard equipment.
The Cayenne S gets a turbocharged V6 that makes 434-horsepower. It also features a panoramic sunroof and a Power Steering Plus package that changes the feeling of weight in the steering wheel depending on the speed of the vehicle.
Step up to the GTS and you’ll get a turbocharged V8 that makes 453-horsepower. It sits on 21-inch wheels and an air suspension. It also gets leather upholstery, sport seats, torque vectoring, a sports exhaust system, an active rear spoiler, and a Porsche Sport Design package with black trim.
Opt for the turbo and you’ll drive away with 541-horsepower, upgraded brakes, a power-adjustable steering wheel, and a 14-speaker Bose audio system.
At the top of the range, the 2022 Cayenne Turbo S e-Hybrid makes a mind-blowing 670-horsepower and offers 15 miles of all-electric range. It also gets a special anti-roll system for better handling.
This trim only comes in the Cayenne Coupe body style and makes 631-horsepower. It also gets special 22-inch wheels, 18-way adjustable sport seats, and a special titanium exhaust.
Porsche offers four years or 50,000-miles of limited and powertrain warranty coverage on every new Cayenne. That’s in line with many rivals like BMW but falls behind Jaguar, Genesis, and others. Porsche also doesn’t match those brands when it comes to complimentary maintenance which runs out in just a year or 10,000-miles.

It’s been said before but it bears repeating, this is a Porsche first and an SUV second. It’s the perfect solution for the person who begrudgingly accepts an SUV in their life due to circumstances, not the one who thinks of big boxes as status symbols. The Cayenne is a status symbol but it gets there by actually being good to drive and providing practicality at the same time. Yes, it’s wildly expensive and way outside of the price range of most folks. Yes, it should include a lot more safety equipment and match rivals when it comes to complimentary maintenance. But all those rivals could surely learn a thing or two about how to go around a corner quickly. The Cayenne is a great example.
