Cars from Our Favorite Spooky Television Shows

It’s that time of year again when the temperatures cool, the leaves change, and the monsters take center stage. Carsforsale.com has already given you a list of our favorite scary car movies, but now we’re moving to the small screen as we dive into some of our favorite cars from spooky television series. We’ve got all of the best cars that have been driven by vampires, ghouls, demons, zombies, and some that drive themselves. Here are some of our favorite cars that have been featured in spooky TV shows!

The Munsters

Starting off this list is The Munsters cars, which are a pair of TV icons. The Munsters are your typical Transylvanian-American family that are far from normal even if they pretend to be. Their family car of choice is the Munster Koach, a ridiculous ride that merged the looks of an old timey hearse and an overly built hot rod. The Munster Koach was designed by Tom Daniel and brought to life by Barris Kustoms. The team utilized three Ford Model T bodies, created a long 133-inch frame, produced all the custom brass work in house, hand-formed all the rolled steel scrollwork, and painstakingly molded the Munster Koach into the classic we know today.

Barris Kustoms didn’t just stop there for The Munsters cars though, the Hollywood Kustom Kulture shop also created DRAG-U-LA. While this drag racing coffin only appeared for one episode, it left a significant impact on fans and the car culture world. DRAG-U-LA’s coffin design was very ornate while also playing into the spooky motif by adding a gravestone at the front and organ pipes for the vehicle’s exhaust. However, this wasn’t just a cool looking coffin on wheels, it carried some actual power with it. A 289 CID V8 from a Ford Mustang was put inside and modified to achieve an estimated 320 horsepower and paired to a four-speed manual transmission. Then this coffin was given some serious rubber in the form of some 10.5-inch Firestone racing slicks mounted at the rear that helped grab the asphalt and run the dragstrip.

The Addams Family

They’re creepy and their kooky, their mysterious and spooky – it’s The Addams Family car up next. The Addams Family probably wouldn’t win in a race against The Munsters, but the strange TV family’s car of choice is definitely a lot more luxurious. A black 1933 Packard V-12 convertible sedan is seen throughout the series driven by their servant Lurch, but its most significant on-screen time was when Gomez took the car to the DMV. The Packard either gets stuck in reverse a lot or Gomez has no clue what he’s doing behind the wheel, but I’m leaning towards the second option as the car ends up disheveled after his driver’s test.

The Twilight Zone

The Twilight Zone is a classic television show that features a bunch of odd, crazy, mystical, and scary short stories. Some of these stories center themselves around a car. There’s The Hitch-Hiker episode in which a woman driving a 1959 Mercury Montclair has a near death experience and from then on keeps encountering a hitchhiker that’s said to be the personification of death itself. Another good one is The Whole Truth where the purchase of a Ford Model A forces its owner to only tell the truth, which turns out to be a hard thing to do when you’re a fast-talking car dealer trying to flip it for profit.

But probably the best cars from The Twilight Zone are the ones that come to life though. A Thing About Machines show us a man who unleashes his anger on inanimate objects around his house until they come to life and attack him. This episode features a 1939 Lagonda LG6 Rapide coupe that comes to life and attacks the man, which is the first living car attack ever seen on-screen predating major cinema like Christine and The Car. The Twilight Zone kept the trope alive in other episodes like You Drive where a man hits a bicyclist with his Ford Fairlane and then drives away from the accident, but his car forces him to confess his crime and even drives him to the police station.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Now we’re getting into some of the more modern spooky television shows. Buffy the Vampire Slayer follows a young woman as she conquers the forces of evil and also encounters some cool cars. The show had so many cool cars in fact, Johnny Lightning made a short line of 1/64 scale replicas featuring some of the cars seen in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Cars like Spike’s DeSoto Fireflite and Xander’s Chevrolet Bel Air are both pretty sweet, but Rupert Giles had some of the best cars in the show. The Watcher had a sophisticated 1967 Citroën DS21 Pallas for a short while before being destroyed and then was later replaced by a 1987 BMW 325i cabriolet in later episodes. Can’t be mad at either of those cars, especially when you’re out dealing with the paranormal.

True Blood

True Blood follows Sookie Stackhouse as she encounters the world of vampires in southern Louisiana. The show is full of odd classics here and there like a ‘74 AMC Gremlin, a ‘70 Ford Bronco, an ‘80 Honda Civic, and a ‘96 Dodge Ram 1500 among many others. However, there was one car featured in the show that felt to me like the ultimate vampire ride – Eric’s blood red 2009 SV Motors 9 Competizione. It’s essentially a C6 Corvette that underwent an Italian redesign and cut weight with more carbon fiber. Have to appreciate that 1000-year-old vampire’s taste when it comes to cars.

The Vampire Diaries

Alright, last vampire centered show. The Vampire Diaries takes place in the supernatural infested town of Mystic Falls. It’s there that a teenage girl falls in love with a vampire and becomes intertwined in a bunch of occult drama. Not my cup of tea, but there are some great looking cars in the show. There’s a Porsche 356 B, Buick GS, Mini Cooper S, and a number of other fun rides amongst the numerous Ford product placements. Although, the best car of The Vampire Diaries has nothing to do with the blue oval’s blatant sponsorship. One of the main characters, Damon Salvatore, drives a blue 1969 Chevrolet Camaro convertible throughout a majority of the series.

Ash vs Evil Dead

The Evil Dead was a great supernatural horror film from Sam Raimi that spurred subsequent Evil Dead films that grew more outlandish with each installment. Ash vs Evil Dead is a TV series that takes place 30 years following the events of the first three films that follows Ash Williams once again as he takes on the Evil Dead in the modern day. Being a Sam Raimi production, a yellow 1973 Oldsmobile Delta 88 is seen throughout the show as Ash fights off the possessed masses. The car used in the show isn’t Raimi’s personal Delta 88, instead it is a very close reproduction.

The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead popularized zombie survival media and is still going strong in its 11th season. As for cars seen in The Walking Dead, you’ve got memorable cars like Dale’s Winnebago Chieftain, Rick’s Ford Crown Victoria, The Governor’s Dodge Ram 1500, that Pontiac Bonneville that clotheslined a horde, and so many more. There have been so many vehicles seen throughout the long-running zombie apocalypse show that it’s hard to narrow down.

There is however one model that was thrust into the spotlight as part of a brand deal for The Walking Dead. You may have noticed a 2011 Hyundai Tucson used throughout the first couple seasons. This was done as a part of a sponsorship with Hyundai and actually led to a special edition version of the Tucson in association with the show. Along with black and red zombie inspired appearance additions to the SUV, the special edition came with a The Walking Dead Zombie Survival Kit that includes all of the essentials one could need while living through a zombie apocalypse.

Supernatural

Supernatural follows the Winchester brothers as they travel around the country fending off demons, monsters, and other dark entities. Aside from Dean and Sam, the main character of the show is the brothers’ black 1967 Chevrolet Impala that’s affectionately nicknamed Baby. The car was passed down to the boys from their father and its more than just some classic car. The Supernatural car is a helpful tool as it not only is a quick machine, but its trunk is full of helpful weapons to fight off evil. The Impala is more than tool though, it’s as important to the story as any living character on the show. The car compels an emotional response when it gets damaged (which happens a lot), plus it’s been possessed which is technically living too.

Stranger Things

Stranger Things is the newest spooky TV show on our list and the show features some nostalgic ‘80s cars as a group of kids fight off the dark beings from the Upside Down. You’ve got the hero cars like Steve’s BMW E23 7-Series, Billy’s Camaro Z-28, and Nancy’s Mercury Grand Marquis Colony Park, but the car that most fans probably recognize the most is Hopper’s Police car. It’s a two-tone tan 1983 Chevrolet Blazer K5 with a law enforcement lightbar and “Hawkins Police Dept.” slapped on the doors. Looking for more on the Stranger Things cars?
