2020 Ford Expedition Max Powertrain

2020 Ford Expedition Max 3.5L V6 - carsforsale.com

The 2020 Ford Expedition Max is powered by a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine that uses advanced twin-turbocharging technology to produce 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. While this is the only engine offered, if you step up to the Platinum trim level, the engine is tuned to deliver 400 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque. Power is routed to the rear wheels as standard, but the optional Control Trac Four Wheel Drive system gives you extra traction in slippery conditions. When you wander off-road, the 9.8-inches of ground clearance means you’ll have no problem clearing most obstacles.

The Expedition Max’s extra length does reduce its departure and breakover angles, so it’s not the absolute best choice for extreme off-roading. There is one transmission offered on the Expedition, a ten-speed SelectShift automatic that ensures brisk acceleration and optimized fuel economy. The Expedition Max rides on standard multilink independent rear suspension which provides an impressively smooth ride and confident handling. The suspension does an admirable job keeping the weight in check and not letting the Expedition lean too much in the corners. For a thorough review of the Expedition Max, read our review here.

Towing & Payload

The base 2020 Ford Expedition Max can tow 9,000 pounds. This does not change between the two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive versions. If you plan to do a lot of towing, you’ll want to consider the Heavy-Duty Trailer tow package which includes a heavy-duty radiator to help keep your engine cool, an integrated trailer brake controller to help slow things down, and the Pro Trailer Backup Assist system that makes reversing with a trailer a whole lot easier.

2020 Ford Expedition Max Fuel Economy & MPG

With higher gas prices comes more focus on fuel economy and the 2020 Expedition Max performs acceptably here. Its advanced powertrain provides impressive power and is a bit more efficient than the Chevy Suburban, which is its primary rival. The Expedition Max with two-wheel drive is rated at 17 mpg in the city, 23 mpg on the highway, and 19 mpg combined. The four-wheel drive models achieve 16 mpg in the city, 21 mpg highway, and 18 mpg combined. The Chevy Suburban’s base V8 engine gets 18 mpg combined on 2WD models and 16 mpg combined on 4WD models.

Interior, Comfort, & Cargo Space

If you want an SUV that offers a great mix of space and comfort, the 2020 Ford Expedition Max is a great choice. The base model comes equipped with seating for eight people thanks to three rows of seats. Headroom is generous throughout with 42 inches for the first row, 40 inches for the second row, and 37.4 for the third row. The Expedition Max comes standard with Ford’s PowerFold and Power Recline third-row seats which offer some adjustability for those passengers and the seats can be easily folded out of the way when more space is needed for stuff.

The base XLT trim comes with cloth seats, 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, and split folding second and third-row seats. The top Platinum trim comes with leather seats that are heated in the first- and second-rows, Active Motion technology that helps you arrive feeling more refreshed, and power-folding second-row seats. When you have all three rows of seats up, the Expedition Max holds 34.3 cubic feet of cargo. Drop the third row and it expands to accommodate 73.3 cubic feet. If you drop all of the rear seats, you can fit up to 121.5 cubic feet of stuff inside. Ample space is one of the reasons we list the Ford Expedition as one of the best SUVs for passengers.

What we think

2020 Ford Expedition Max - media.ford.com

The 2020 Ford Expedition Max is a great choice for a large family that needs extra space for stuff and the power to tow on occasion. With three generous rows offering seating for eight, the whole family will fit comfortably, the extended wheelbase of the Max provides that critical extra space for cargo in the back, and the standard EcoBoost V6 engine provides plenty of towing power. If you want luxury, the King Ranch and Platinum trims are sure to impress. However, we would recommend the Limited trim as a good fit for most families, as it still offers lots plenty of luxury without any sacrificing capability.
