A new front face, revised taillamps and updated wheel designs freshen up the 2022 Ford Expedition, now four years into its 4th generation. The Expedition, Ford’s biggest SUV, has been on sale for 25 years. You can read more about the Ford Expedition’s history here. These days, it can be optioned in the MAX setup that adds about 12” of length to put it on scale with Chevy’s Suburban, a comparison you can read here. Joining its Explorer stable mate, there is now a Timberline trim available ready to tackle the trail with a lifted suspension and beefier running gear. On the tech front, there is a standard 12” infotainment screen, while hands-free BlueCruise tech joins the Platinum party.

Top models are only 10 horses down on the Raptor
Can now drive and park itself
New Stealth Performance Edition looks sinister
EcoBoost doesn’t mean eco-friendly fuel consumption
All the space and towing you need in an SUV
Ford’s 3.5L turbocharged EcoBoost V6 is available in three output flavors including base models that produce 380 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. Limited trim and above bump those figures up to 400 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque, while Timberline models are fitted with a high-output variant making 440 horses and 510 lb-ft of twist. That motor is also part of the, new for 2022, Stealth Performance Edition. It is available on Limited trim or higher and also features dual exhaust pipes, red-painted calipers and a darkened exterior treatment.
Four-corner independent suspension helps keep this near three-ton brute planted with an available Continuous Controlled Damping suspension system to further improve ride quality. Rear-wheel-drive is standard, though 4×4 running gear can be optioned for about $3,000 on both regular-size Expeditions and the MAX models that stretch overall length by 12 inches.
Topping out at 9,300 pounds of towing capacity is more than enough for weekend adventures in your Expedition. Trailer Sway Control and a Class IV hitch receiver with 4/7-pin wiring harness is standard equipment. To achieve that max rating however, you will need the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow package that brings a 3.73 rear axle ratio, trailer brake controller and Pro Trailer Backup Assist to the party.
Ford adds efficiency minded gear to all 2022 Expeditions including active grille shutters and an active air dam, the latter of which deploys above 40 mph to smooth airflow. Auto start-stop is also in use to this end, but a RWD model is only rated for 17 mpg in city driving and 23 on the highway. Adding 4WD drops the highway figure to 22 mpg.
Eight seats are standard in the 2022 Expedition with a second-row bench, though you can swap that out for dual captain’s chairs. Upholstery ranges from cloth and ActiveX faux-leather, to the real thing with available heated cushions for the first two rows. Higher level models offer ventilation and massaging functions on the front seats. Triple-zone auto HVAC is included from XLT trim and above with options like a panoramic sunroof, Active Noise Control and power-folding second and third row seating furthering the upmarket vibe. A regular Expedition can swallow up to 104 cubic feet of cargo but if you require even more capacity, get yourself a MAX model that fits 121 cubes of your stuff with the back two rows folded.
Lineup standard, the 12” infotainment display connects wirelessly with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring software and includes a Wi-Fi hotspot, navigation and FordPass Connect for app-based control of certain vehicle systems. King Ranch models and above come with an even bigger 15.5” screen along with a fully digital gauge cluster and 22-speaker Bang &Olufsen Unleashed audio system – something you won’t find on the 2021 Expedition that we review here. A wireless charging pad, USB ports for all three rows and 110-volt household power receptacles are all available as well.
Ford’s suite of advanced driver assistance systems, Co-Pilot360, is standard on the 2022 Expedition and includes emergency braking, lane keeping aids, blind spot monitoring and automatic high beams. Assist+, found on the Limited models and above, adds Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Speed Sign Recognition (SSR), forward sonar, Evasive Steering Assist(ESA), Intersection Assist and reverse brake assist. A 360° exterior camera and self-parking system is available further up the trim ladder with BlueCruise, Ford’s hands-free driving tech, only fitted to the top-spec Platinum Expedition.
LED headlamps activated by the windshield wipers, heated side mirrors, running boards and 18” wheels are all standard equipment on the entry-level Expedition XL. As is a huge 12” touchscreen running Ford’s SYNC 4 infotainment software with Over-The-Air update capability, a Wi-Fi hotspot and wireless connectivity for Apple and Android smartphones. Cloth is the only fabric available and there are a whopping 15 cup holders scattered through the cabin.
XLT offers upgrades, over the XL, like tri-zone automatic climate control, a power-folding third row and auto-dimming rearview mirror. Select the 202A Group for all manner of niceties from a heated steering wheel and power-adjustable pedals to a wireless charging pad and fully climatized front row.
Expedition Limited is nicely outfitted with 20” wheels, a panoramic Vista Roof, leather upholstery and a heated second row. A 12-speaker Bang & Olufson sound system provides the beats with Co-Pilot360 Assist+ adding on to the standard Co-Pilot360 list of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Assist+ includes Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Evasive Steering Assist (ESA), Intersection Assist (IA) and connected navigation.
New this year, Timberline trim is trail focused with 32” all-terrain tires, extra ground clearance, off-road suspension components and Trail Turn Assist that will brake the inside wheel to execute tight, low-speed maneuvers like on the Bronco. It also features an exclusive design scheme with Active Orange trim and laser-etched Timberline logos to help it stand out.
Ford’s King Ranch brand has been around for years and the Expedition follows the formula with fancy Del Rio leather, loads of King Ranch logos and a host of luxury trappings. Those include 22” rims, power-deployable running boards and SYNC 4A software with its mammoth 15.5” portrait-oriented touchscreen.
Befitting the name, Expedition Platinum is fully loaded with hands-free driving and parking technology, a 22-speaker B&O stereo, leather covering the doors, dash and seats plus a hands-free liftgate. The list goes on with Active Motion massaging front seats, a wireless charging pad and exterior Zone Lighting.
Ford’s basic vehicle warranty runs 3 years or 36,000 miles and the powertrain coverage extends to 5 years or 60,000 miles. There is no complimentary maintenance, which may raise some eyebrows when ponying up nearly $80,000 for a 2022 Expedition.
