2022 GMC Yukon: Large and In Charge

The 2022 GMC Yukon has a sprawling interior, loads of power, screens galore, and the ability to tow over 8,000 pounds, making it an ideal family hauler.

What’s New for the 2022 GMC Yukon?

All-new for the 2021 model year with a fully independent suspension, the 2022 Yukon arrives with a 12” digital instrument panel included across the lineup. Google Built-In is also on hand, allowing for voice control of Google apps like Maps and Assistant. AT4 models can now be equipped with the 6.2L V8 and the power-sliding center console is now a standard Denali feature. Ongoing supply chain snarls continue to impact feature availability, or lack thereof. Notable items that new Yukon models will not have are a steering column lock, heated rear seats, and front row lumbar adjustment.

With 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque, the standard 5.3L V8 motor is enough to move the 2022 GMC Yukon around with ease. However, if you want to really get up and go, opt for the 6.2L V8 with its 420 horses that is only available on AT4 and Denali trim. For the fuel-efficiency minded, there is a 3.0L Duramax turbodiesel that churns up a serious 460 lb-ft of torque. In all cases, GM’s 10-speed automatic transmission routes power to the rear wheels, though 4WD is available. Denali models come with Magnetic Ride Control adaptive dampers and the option for adaptive springs in the Air Ride system, a combo that promises a serene ride.

Towing & Payload

All 2022 GMC Yukons come ready to handle basic hauling duty with engine and transmission oil coolers, trailer sway control, and a hitch with 2” receiver and 7-pin wiring harness. To reach the 8,400-pound max figure however, you will need to pony up for the Max Trailering package that adds a trailer brake controller, Hitch View, enhanced cooling radiator, and more. HD Surround Vision is a useful system for towing as it provides an overhead 360° view of the Yukon.

2022 GMC Yukon Fuel Economy & MPG

Active grille shutters, idle start-stop, and cylinder deactivation on the 2022 GMC Yukon’s V8s all do their best to limit fuel consumption, but they can’t truly combat 3 tons of metal. In RWD setup, the 5.3L V8 achieves only 14 mpg in city driving and 20 mpg on the highway and the 6.2L variant comes in at 14 mpg and 19 mpg, respectively. With 4WD, both V8 mills also hit 14 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway for efficiency. Nearly 650 miles of driving range are possible with the 3.0L turbodiesel that hits 21 mpg around town and 27 mpg on the highway on 2WD Yukons, figures that drop by 1 mpg each with 4WD.

Interior, Comfort, & Cargo Space

The 2022 GMC Yukon is a big vehicle, capable of seating 9 people with the optional front bench on SLE models. That can drop to 7 with buckets in the first and second row. Fold both rows to open up 123 cubic feet of cargo volume, a feat that can happen via power-operation on higher trims. Stepping up to the Denali brings exclusive touches like “fractal” stitching and real teak wood accents, though tri-zone HVAC control is lineup standard. The available power-sliding center console moves 10” and hides a secure cubby underneath, while features like a panoramic sunroof and laminated front glass serve up a very pleasant atmosphere.

Entertainment & Technology

When equipped with the 15” color HUD and rear seat media system, the 2022 GMC Yukon combines for over 62” of total screen space. The 10” infotainment interface can show up to 13 camera angles and the rearview mirror can be switched to a live rear feed. A Wi-Fi hotspot, USB ports for all 3 rows, and GMC Connected Access with OnStar is standard fare as is Google Built-In and wireless integration for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. AT4 and Denali models come with a 3-year data subscription to power all that connectivity and an available Bose stereo with 14 speakers and CenterPoint surround sound tech is sure to rattle the windows.

Safety Features

GMC fits every 2022 Yukon with their Pro Safety group of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) that features automated emergency braking, parking sonar, and automatic high beams. Lane change alert with blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert is available as is adaptive cruise control, HD Surround Vision, and reverse automatic braking. Buckle to Drive and Teen Driver systems are included on all Yukon models, but only Denali ones come with advanced security features like glass-break sensors, an inclination and interior movement sensor, plus a self-powered siren to notify the area of a possible theft.

You won’t win any fuel efficiency awards, but you will be able to carry family and friends in style and comfort just about anywhere with the 2022 Yukon.
