2022 Kia Sportage: A Solid Swan Song

Though the 2022 Kia Sportage is the final iteration before an all-new 2023 model, it continues to stake out a high-value position in a crowded segment.

What’s New for the 2022 Kia Sportage

The 2022 Kia Sportage represents the final model year of this compact SUV’s third generation. With a full redesign on the horizon for 2023, there are not any major updates here. However, the Sportage continues to offer a high level of features and tech for a sub-$25,000 entry price. There is a new LX Value Edition package and the S trim goes away, replaced by the standalone Nightfall edition. As well, the EX model receives a panoramic sunroof as standard equipment and complimentary navigation map updates are added to the SX Turbo

The 2022 Kia Sportage is offered in front-wheel drive configuration at all price points though all-wheel drive is an option for $1500-$1700, depending on trim. LX, Nightfall and EX models are all powered by a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder motor making 181 hp and 175 torques via natural aspiration. Stepping up the SX Turbo nets the punchy, 240-horse, turbocharged 2.0-liter engine that churns out a substantial 260 lb-ft of torque. While you can stick with a FWD setup on the Turbo, you might consider the AWD option to counter torque steer.

All 2022 Kia Sportages are equipped with a traditional, 8-speed automatic transmission, MacPherson struts up front, and a torsion beam setup out back with coil springs. Turbocharged models receive larger front brake rotors and a sport tuned suspension that should allow for some zest in the bendy bits. Drive Select Mode is standard equipment and offers unique programming of steering response, transmission shift points and throttle response depending on the mode chosen that includes Normal, Eco, Sport, Comfort, Smart, and Custom.

2022 Kia Sportage Fuel Economy & MPG

2022 Kia Sportage - kia.com
2022 Kia Sportage - kia.com

The 2022 Kai Sportage is a compact SUV, but isn’t exactly a fly weight, tipping the scales at 3,596 pounds for a front-wheel drive LX model up to just about two tons in AWD-equipped Turbo trim. So, while the fuel economy is decent at 23 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway for that basic model, it drops to 22/26, respectively, with the all-wheel drive layout. The turbocharged mill is estimated to hit 20 mpg around town and 28 mpg on the highway in FWD guise or a paltry 19/24 for city/highway with the all-wheel drive setup.

Interior, Comfort, & Cargo Space

2022 Kia Sportage occupants will find a pleasant interior with the available leather upholstery and climate-controlled seating up front. Even basic models, though cloth covered, have HVAC vents for rear passengers. That back seat split-folds in a 60/40 configuration and includes a few degrees of recline. When fully folded, 60 cubic feet of storage volume opens up and the cargo floor can be set at two different heights, depending on your needs. The panoramic roof includes a power sunshade, furthering interior comfort and dual zone climate controls are available on every 2022 Sportage model.

Entertainment & Technology

Across the board, an 8” touch-enabled display handles vehicle functions and entertainment such as Apple and Android smartphone mirroring. Higher level trims offer the UVO link system that connects owners to their Sportage via smartphone. It allows for remote operation of climate controls, vehicle start, and door locks. An 8-speaker Clari-Fi Harmon Kardon stereo system is available for audiophiles and upmarket features like Qi wireless charging and smart cruise control with stop & go traffic management are available as well.

Safety Features

Every 2022 Kia Sportage comes with the company’s Drive Wise bundle of driver-assist systems. That includes forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping and departure warning, plus a driver attention monitor and automatic high beams. For Nightfall trim and above, blind spot monitoring and rear-cross traffic warning is included. Airbags cover driver and passenger from front and side impacts as well as a full-length curtain for all occupants. When equipped with AWD, a downhill brake control feature applies braking to individual wheels to maintain constant speed on slippery downgrades.

LX – $24,090

Considering its price and position as the entry level Sportage, LX trim offers a relatively high level of tech, features, and creature comforts. The exterior is dressed up with 17” alloy wheels, tinted rear glass, and LED daytime running lights.

Inside, an 8” touchscreen handles the infotainment systems like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Siri Eyes Free. Windows, door locks, and side mirrors are all power operated while the seating is covered with cloth. A $2100 Value Edition package brings power adjustability to the driver’s seat, automatic climate control, 18” rims, and more.

Nightfall – $28,090

Befitting its name, the Nightfall Sportage sits on dark grey-colored size 18” wheels with a piano black front grille and exterior trim. Side mirrors are heated, the upholstery is upgraded to Kia’s SynTex fabric, and a flat-bottomed steering wheel adds sporty flair. The available Premium package adds LED tail lamps, smart cruise control, and a host of other upgrades for $2000.

EX – $28,390

The Sportage EX is the top-level trim for the naturally aspirated powertrain and includes a hands-free power liftgate, machine-finished 18” wheels, heated front seats, and dual zone automated climate control. Add the Technology package for $3560 to grab most of the SX Turbo amenities without the thirstier engine. Notable items include a high-end, 820-watt Harman Kardon audio system, ventilated front seats, and a heated steering wheel.

2022 Kia Sportage SX Turbo - carsforsale.com
2022 Kia Sportage SX Turbo - carsforsale.com

SX Turbo – $33,750

The biggest difference with the SX Turbo is the turbocharged, 240 horse motor under the hood that is not available on any other model. 19” wheels spruce up the looks along with LED headlights and dual exhaust tips. The smartphone-operated UVO link software allows for remote control of several vehicle functions. No packages are offered on the SX Turbo as it comes fully loaded with wireless phone charging, front and rear parking sensors, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

Warranties

Years ago, Kia made a name for itself with their powertrain warranty that covers 10 years or 100,000 miles of driving, and it remains in place today. The basic vehicle coverage lasts for 5 years or 60,000 miles as does roadside assistance. Rust perforations fall under a 5-year/100,000-mile warranty term, but there is no complimentary maintenance included with the 2022 Kia Sportage.

While it’s tempting for prospective buyers to wait for the incoming, all-new fourth-gen Sportage, if you don’t have the time, the current 2022 Kia Sportage needs not be passed over. It covers more than the basics for less than $25,000 and offers loads of fanciness, plus a raucous turbocharged powertrain for those willing to push their budget.
