The 2023 Jeep Renegade has a few changes. The most notable change is the discontinuation of FWD – which means that all 2023 Jeep Renegades will be AWD. Jeep also did away with the Sport trim (formerly the base trim level).
A Premium Group package is now offered which includes heated front seats and steering wheel, roof rails, a powered driver’s seat, cornering fog lamps, and a windshield wiper deicer. The 2023 Jeep Renegade comes with a turbocharged 1.3L four-cylinder engine and a nine-speed automatic transmission. It isn’t a powerhouse, but it provides adequate power on the pavement as well as offroad. It is capable of delivering 177 horsepower and 210 lb ft of torque to all four wheels. Compared to other subcompact SUVs, it was a bit slow – taking 9.3 seconds to reach 60 MPH from a standstill.
The ride can be described as comfortable for all models even though the Trailhawk trim feels a bit stiff thanks to the offroad tuned suspension. It isn’t so stiff as to detract terribly from the overall driving experience, but you can definitely tell that it is there. It handles well around corners with very little body roll; this is a remarkable achievement since the Renegade has a rather boxy design.
Handling is smooth and precise and surprisingly nimble for a subcompact. The lack of body roll really helps in tight turns which it handles with ease. While Jeeps aren’t particularly known for their nimble handling, the 2023 Jeep Renegade is a nice surprise.
All versions of the 2023 Jeep Renegade will have no problems on the most modest trails with 8 inches of ground clearance. The aptly named Trailhawk has offroad-tuned suspension which gives it 8.7 inches of ground clearance. Not bad for a mini-Jeep!
Overall, the driving experience is not as thrilling as some competitors, but it does everything well. You can look at the 2023 Jeep Renegade as a daily driver that just so happens to like off-roading in its spare time.
The 2023 Jeep Renegade can tow up to 2,000 lbs. when properly equipped. This means that you could tow a lightweight trailer or camper along with you on your weekend excursions. Not bad for a subcompact SUV!
The 2023 Jeep Renegade gets 23 MPG city/29 MPG highway from most trims. The Trailhawk is the only exception, and it gets 22 MPG city/27 MPG highway due to the offroad suspension and tires. While real-world tests have seen the Jeep Renegade achieve 29 MPG, it still doesn’t beat competitors like the Kia Soul and Nissan Kicks.
While the driving experience doesn’t give us anything to write home about, the interior layout and design are fun. Jeep has been known to give drivers hidden Easter eggs (some Jeep models have a Morse code message on the footrest), and this is no exception. The layout has all kinds of shapes and design surprises that really make it fun.
The materials are high-quality plastics for the most part, but it doesn’t feel cheap. There are leather seats available on higher trims too which adds even more to the quality feel of the interior. It’s far from luxury, but it is certainly not on the level of an economy car.
Not all can be so grand though. The interior lacks small item storage compared to competitors. Rear storage can be a little limiting with the seats folded up (18.5 cubic feet). With the rear seats folded flat, you get 50.8 cubic feet of storage space. It’s nice, but some competitors offer more.
The biggest gripe, however, is the lack of rear visibility thanks to very thick roof pillars. This creates some wide blind spots which are thankfully watched by a blind spot monitoring system.
The 2023 Jeep Renegade comes with an 8.4-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. You also get built-in navigation and SiriusXM satellite radio. For audiophiles, there is a Kenwood audio system available on select trims.
There are some great safety features offered with the 2023 Jeep Renegade. Adaptive cruise control, semi-autonomous parking assist, and front parking sensors are just a few of these features. Standard features include forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
The 2023 Jeep Renegade received a 4-star overall crash test rating from the NHTSA.
The base model Jeep Renegade comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry, automatic headlights, foglights, remote start, roof rails, cloth upholstery, and rear USB ports.
The Upland trim gives you everything that the Latitude trim offers plus some rugged exterior stylings, black badges, and gray grille accents.
The Altitude comes with everything you get in the Latitude package plus 18-inch black painted wheels, gloss black exterior accents, automatic wipers, auto-dimming rearview mirror, windshield deicer, heated leather steering wheel, power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, a 115-volt power outlet, 40/20/40 split folding rear seats, panoramic sunroof, and optional Kenwood audio system.
The (RED) Edition comes with features such as 19-inch granite crystal wheels, red mirror caps, (RED) badging, red bezels, heated power exterior mirrors with integrated turn signals, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with red stitching.
This is the offroad trim. It comes with Jeep’s Active Drive Low 4×4 system, Selec-Terrain Traction Management System with Rock Mode, 17-inch aluminum wheels with all-terrain tires, trailer tow package, available heated front seats, available dual-pane panoramic sunroof, and available Kenwood audio system upgrade.
The Limited trim is the top-of-the-line Renegade and offers features such as heated leather-trimmed front seats, a power-adjustable driver seat with power lumbar adjust, leather-wrapped steering wheel, adaptive cruise control, dual-pane panoramic sunroof, Kenwood audio, 19-inch granite crystal wheels, and LED headlamps.
Jeep’s warranty coverage is industry-average with a 3-year/36,000-mile basic term and five years or 60,000 miles on the powertrain. Five years or 60,000 miles of roadside assistance is also included. Jeep also offers complementary oil changes and tire rotations for the first 3 years of ownership.

The 2023 Jeep Renegade is a great subcompact SUV. There are a few shortcomings that make it less desirable than some of the competition when used as a daily driver. However, the off-roading capabilities of the Trailhawk trim make this little Jeep stand out from the crowd. Other subcompacts lack the ruggedness that Jeep is known for, and that is the selling point for the Renegade.
Overall, the 2023 Jeep Renegade is a great choice for a daily driver that brings some off-roading capabilities to the table. While there may not be any exciting driving to be had, it still offers some of the ruggedness that Jeep fans crave. “It’s a Jeep thing”, after all.
