What’s New for the 2022 Chevrolet Suburban?
The Suburban nameplate has been in use since all the way back in the 1930s, a history we’ve covered on here before. This 2022 Chevrolet Suburban model is part of the all-new 12th-generation that was unveiled just last year. As a vehicle you buy when you need as much space as possible, the 2022 Suburban expands availability of the 6.2L V8 to RST, Z71, and Premier models. Google Built-In software is now included on the LT and above as is the 12.3” configurable instrument panel screen. Additional driver-aids like IntelliBeam have been added to the list of lineup standard systems and a few new colors, including Auburn Metallic, are added to the palate. Prices are up a bit over the 2021 Suburban that we reviewed before in this article, with the base LS model increasing by $650.

2022 Chevrolet Suburban Powertrain
Most 2022 Chevrolet Suburbans are powered by a 5.3L V8 that makes 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. Standard on High Country models is a 6.2L V8 turned up to 420 horses and 460 lb-ft of torque. An available 3.0L Duramax turbodiesel makes 277 horsepower and matches the 6.2L on torque output. In all cases, a 10-speed automatic sends power to the rear wheels though 4WD is optional on all trims. Z71 models, with 4×4 standard, are off-road ready with mud-terrain tires, skid plates, and the available air suspension allowing for manual adjustment to improve ground clearance. Pairing the air-powered system with Magnetic Ride Control should give the big ‘Burban an uncannily smooth ride.
Towing & Payload
External coolers for the transmission and engine oil, trailer sway control, a 2” receiver, 7-pin wiring harness, and Hitch Guidance with Hitch View camera angles are standard across the 2022 Chevrolet Suburban lineup. With the Max Trailering package that adds an integrated trailer brake controller and beefier radiator, the max tow rating is 8,300 pounds. Tech like a Trailer Side Blind Zone Alert and Transparent Trailer view make hauling that much easier.
2022 Chevrolet Suburban Fuel Economy & MPG
Considering a 2022 Chevrolet Suburban can top 6,000 pounds at the scales, a fuel efficiency rating of 15 mpg city and 20 mpg highway, for 2WD models with the 5.3L V8, isn’t so bad. Equipped with the 6.2L variant only reduces the city rating by 1 mpg and in both cases, adding 4WD changes the ratings to 14 mpg city and 19 highway. For an incredible highway range of 700+ miles, the Duramax steps in with a 21 mpg city and 27 mpg highway rating. Subtract 1 mpg from each figure for 4WD.
Interior, Comfort, & Cargo Space
Known for their humungous interior space, a 2022 Chevrolet Suburban is 4 inches longer than an Expedition Max and 15” past a Tahoe. Capable of swallowing 145 cubic feet of stuff with the second and third row folded, it is ideal tailgating vehicle, which is why it made this list. Creature comforts come in the form of tri-zone climate control, leather upholstery, and a panoramic sunroof. The second row can slide to adjust legroom and you can seat 9 people in an LS model by opting for a front bench that nets a $250 credit. What you won’t find are heated or ventilated seating, nor a heated steering wheel, as a result of supply chain problems.
Entertainment & Technology
On 2022 Chevrolet Suburban LT models and above, a 12” digital instrument panel and 10” infotainment screen offer configurability and wireless mirroring of Apple and Android smartphones. Google Built-In comes with Google Maps, Assistant, and Play Store, uh, built in so that you can speak to Google and the Suburban reacts. A 15” HUD makes it easy to keep your eyes facing forward and an available 10-speaker Bose stereo with CenterPoint surround sound will keep the audiophiles entertained.
Safety Features
Front Pedestrian Braking, Forward Collision Alert, and Lane Keeping Assist are all included under the standard Chevy Safety Assist umbrella. Other safety tech on the 2022 Chevrolet Suburban includes parking sonar front and rear, Buckle to Drive, and OnStar capability. Optional add-ons like the Safety Alert Seat and Lane Change Alert with blind spot monitoring offer even more virtual eyes to keep your Suburban safe.

LS – $54,545
Entry-level 2022 Chevrolet Suburban models are fitted with the 5.3L V8 or optional Duramax, but the 6.2L V8 is not available here. 18” wheels, rain-sensing wipers, and LED lighting for all exterior lamps is included. A high-definition reverse camera is useful as backing one of the big SUVs up can be nerve wracking. Inside, the LS is the only model to have with the smaller 8” infotainment touchscreen. However, it does feature wireless integration of Apple and Android devices. As well, there are a pair of 120V receptacles, 6 USB ports, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and Chevy Connected Access. Chevy Safety Assist can be supplemented with the $495 Driver Alert package that adds Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Monitoring and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert.
LT – $59,945
The manual tailgate is replaced with a hands-free, power-operated version on LT trim and optional niceties are unlocked like the $1500 panoramic sunroof and 20” wheels. Leather upholstery and an auto-dimming rearview mirror spruce up the cabin and the full complement of screens is standard from here on up. They consist of a 12” digital instrument panel and 10” infotainment display featuring Google Built-In. There is also a 9-speaker Bose audio system and wireless charging pad.
RST – $63,145
With a monochromatic black grille and 22” gloss back rims, Suburban RST adds visual excitement to the exterior. For some aural excitement, tick the $3815 Sport Performance box that nets the 6.2L V8, dual-exhaust system and Magnetic Ride Control. If you go that route, consider the Brembo brake upgrade kit that adds more stopping power with 16” front rotors plus red-painted calipers all around.
Z71 – $65,145
As the only Suburban with standard 4WD, the Z71 trim is geared for getting off the beaten path. A 2-speed transfer case controls 4×4, red recovery hooks add visual punch, skid plates are bolted on for protection, and the 20” rims are mounted in all-terrain rubber. To improve rough road handling, Magnetic Ride Control and the adaptive air suspension systems, along with an electronically controlled limited-slip differential, can be optioned with the $2995 Off-Road Capability package.
Premier – $67,870
Premier models are snazzed up with chrome trim and 20” polished wheels. Magnetic Ride Control and a dual exhaust are included though the LED-illuminated, power-retractable side steps will set you back $1745. Inside, it’s power-operated everything including the sliding center console, folding third row, and steering column tilt-and-telescope functions. A Bose 10-speaker stereo with CenterPoint is included as is the Safety Alert Seat and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert.
High Country – $74,795
Spending over $70,000 on a Suburban High Country gets you the 6.2L V8, 22” chromes, a unique front grille, sill plates, and interior stitching. A 15” multi-color head-up display projects key vehicle info on the windshield, the rearview mirror can display a live rear feed, HD Surround Vision is included, as is Rear Pedestrian Alert. For $5555, the Deluxe package piles on with Adaptive Cruise Control, air ride suspension, and a panoramic sunroof.
