The 2022 Hyundai Sonata is a mid-sized sedan that punches above its weight class with comfort, speed, and fuel economy.

What’s New for the 2022 Hyundai Sonata?

Hyundai hasn’t added very much for the 2022 Hyundai Sonata. The mid-size sedan shifts some new equipment like a sunroof and a premium audio system for the SEL trim. It also adds a Night Edition appearance to the N Line trim level creating the N Line Night.

2022 Hyundai Sonata Powertrain

It’s rare these days to find a lineup as fast as this one, where every engine is pretty good if not impressive. Each engine found in the 2022 Hyundai Sonata has a very clear space in the roster and provides something that the others can’t. The base 2.5L four-cylinder is efficient and powerful enough that it doesn’t feel inadequate during regular driving. It makes 191 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque. No, it’s not very fast, and it won’t overtake on the highway without breathing hard, but it also doesn’t feel overworked in the vast majority of situations.

The 2.0L four-cylinder hybrid engine that makes 150 horsepower and 139 lb-ft of torque is similar. The big benefit of course is that it’s incredibly efficient. It’s also very, very smooth. We love the seamless power and the quiet and calm nature of all three hybrid models. Then there’s the SEL Plus and the Limited cars which use a real gem of an engine, a turbocharged 1.6L four-cylinder making 180 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. It’s actually has less power than the base engine, but with more torque. It’s just happier to rev out.

If there’s a complaint to be had, it’s that none of these models are particularly excellent to drive. They’re not very sharp when it comes to handling or steering feedback. At the same time, we’re not talking about a sports sedan here either, so perhaps we’re being too picky. Of course, after experiencing the Sonata N Line, it’s easy to see how close to a proper sports sedan this car can be. A turbocharged 2.5L four-cylinder making 290 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque is a bunch for this platform, but the N Line-specific sports suspension and steering reign that power in beautifully. The Honda Accord sedan is a fantastic car, but if it’s our money, we’re buying the Sonata N Line every time.

2022 Hyundai Sonata Fuel Economy & MPG

2022 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid - hyundainews.com

With the 2022 Hyundai Sonata, you can get pretty much any amount of fuel economy you’re after. The worst offender is the Sonata N Line that still gets 27 mpg combined. Every other trim level gets at least 31 mpg combined. Opt for any of the hybrid powertrains and you’ll spend less time at the fuel pump. The SEL and Limited hybrid models get a rating of 47 mpg combined, while the Blue version gets the best numbers for the Sonata at 52 mpg combined.

Interior, Comfort, & Cargo Space

Let’s be very clear from the outset that none of the 2022 Hyundai Sonata trim levels feel luxurious. Still, they do feel like they’re a great value at their respective price points. The quality of the materials is above average. The switchgear is pleasing to use and very well thought out. Comfort is also a tick above the mean. The seats are supportive, but could use more adjustments. Poor road conditions are soaked up ok. Rivals like the Subaru Legacy or Toyota Camry do a better job though.

We wish the seats sat a little lower in the chassis, but that’s a small problem. Rear seat space is good overall. If we have a complaint back there, it’s the lack of climate vents on lower trims. Each of these small gripes are the small signals that this isn’t a luxury vehicle. Cargo space is good with 16 cubic feet in the trunk for things. That’s about average for the segment.

Entertainment & Technology

The 2022 Hyundai Sonata is so advanced that it’s hard to believe it’s the descendant of previous generations. We really like the infotainment system. It might only be available with and 8-inch touchscreen, but it’s fast, it’s featureful, and it’s easy to use. Then there’s the optional 12.3-inch instrument cluster. That thing is even more impressive. But wait, there’s also a heads-up display and a nav system that integrates with adaptive cruise to slow down for lower speed limits and curves.

In addition, Hyundai’s blind-spot monitor view should find its way into all cars, because it provides a live view of the blind-spot in the gauge cluster. We should also mention Hyundai’s Digital Key which provides the opportunity to lock and unlock the car with your phone in addition to other functions. There’s more packed into the Sonata, but we don’t have space to talk about it here.

Safety Features

The 2021 Hyundai Sonata was a Top Safety Pick according to the IIHS, and that applies to the 2022 model as well. The NHTSA gave it a five-star crash test rating too. Then there’s the bevy of advanced safety equipment including adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and lane-keep assist that all come standard on every 2022 Hyundai Sonata.
