2023 Genesis GV80: Forget the Germans

What do our experts think of the 2023 Genesis GV80? We look at powertrain, interior options, trim levels and more. Find out our thoughts here.

What’s New for the 2023 GV80?

Now in its third year, the 2023 Genesis GV80 SUV is part of Hyundai’s luxury division that originated just seven years ago. The brand has been well received with compelling sport sedans like the 2022 G70 that we review here and the larger G80 that earned a spot on this list of Top 10 Luxury Cars.

Given the Genesis GV80’s newness, there are not many changes for 2023 over the 2022 model that we discuss here. Notable updates include lineup-standard AWD – the RWD setup has been discontinued – and a price bump of about $1,200.

2023 Genesis GV80 Powertrain

Though the GV80 was previously sold in RWD or AWD setup, for 2023 it’s a four-wheeled affair throughout the lineup. The nameplate tie to its G80 sedan stablemate is more than skin deep as the SUV shares running gear with the midsize G80, a car that is nosing in on BMW territory as you can read about here.

In base form, said gear consists of a turbocharged 2.5L four pot that makes 300 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque. Upper level GV80’s boast a 3.5L V6 with a pair of turbos huffing and puffing to the tune of 375 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of twist. Both motors pair with an 8-speed automatic sending power to all four corners. Highlights include drive-by-wire throttle and steering column-mounted paddle shifters.

The 2023 GV80 sports a fully independent suspension and, for Prestige models, there is an active suspenders system. Like Mercedes with their Magic Body Control, the Genesis uses a front-facing camera to read the road ahead and then modulate the suspension tune to minimize impacts and provide an extra-smooth ride. Pretty slick.

Towing & Payload

The base 2023 Genesis GV80 can tow 6,000 pounds, a figure that remains the same regardless of engine, though Genesis does not publish much information on this front. With that capacity, the GV80 runs comfortably with a BMW X5 that is rated for 6,600 pounds and positively smokes a Lexus RX that tops out at 3,500 pounds.

Fuel Economy & MPG

Draining a gallon of premium every 18 miles is the pricey result of driving the 3.5T GV80 around town. That number does step up to 23 mpg on the highway, but for the best fuel economy, you’ll of course want to be driving a 2.5T variant. They are rated for 20 mpg in city driving and 24 on the highway, which isn’t much better but not terrible given a BMW X5 is only rated for 21 and 26 mpg, respectively.

Interior, Comfort, & Cargo Space

The 2023 GV80 is a looker from the outside, but the inside is where the magic happens with serious high-end style like the available Maroon Brown and Smokey Green leather two-tone scheme. Base models feature pretend leather, while top models show off quilted Nappa hides. Heated front seats are standard fare and as you move through the trim ladder, amenities like a massaging driver’s seat and climatized second row are unlocked.

Last year, there was a short run of four-passenger GV80s with luxurious rear thrones. That option is gone, replaced with five seats on every model except the 3.5T Advanced+. It is the only way to obtain a third-row bench, though you can expect it to be tiny. Storage cubbies abound throughout the cabin with damped covers for a touch of fancy.

Max cargo space behind the first row is 84 cubic feet and if you need a bit more room, there is a hidden bin under the cargo area floor. To get in there more easily, the hands-free tailgate option comes with an Auto Open function that raises the rear door whenever the key is within 40 feet for at least three seconds.

Entertainment & Technology

Though the Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride, cousins of the GV80, now offer a seamless 24-inches of digital cockpit space, the Genesis stands apart with a floating 14.5-inch infotainment interface. It is touch- and gesture-enabled, and can be controlled via console-mounted rotary dial. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring are standard though not with a wireless connection.

Navigation is standard equipment as is an 8-inch digital screen embedded in the gauge cluster. Higher-level models sport a fully digital instrument panel along with a 12-inch head-up display. Certain GV80s are even fitted with a 21-speaker sound system from Lexicon that should be properly loud.

Safety Features

Stacked with safety systems, like a front center airbag, the 2023 Genesis GV80 earns top marks from both NHTSA and IIHS. Following the Hyundai Group model, this SUV boasts 10 standard active driver-aids including blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control with semi-autonomous capability. Trick systems like remote smart parking assist mean never having to parallel park on your own again.

Warranties

Along with the 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty that Hyundai brands are known for, Genesis models come with three years or 36,000 miles of complimentary service. They also include a valet service that will pick up your GV80, provide a loaner, and deliver your SUV back to you when maintenance is complete.

What we think

Though the Genesis brand is somewhat new, the vehicles – including this 2023 Genesis GV80 – are built on Hyundai platforms. So, if you’re shopping the luxury SUV market and are concerned the GV80 may experience growing pains, fear not. Frankly, why you would pay an extra $10,000, or more, for other luxury brands like BMW or Mercedes is beyond me, the Genesis GV80 is an absolute home run no matter which model you choose.
