What do our experts think of the 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV? We look at powertrain, interior options, trim levels and more. Find out our thoughts here.

What’s New for the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV?

Six inches longer than its Bolt stablemate, the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV is an all-new model that doubles the Bowtie brands’ portfolio of all-electric vehicles. As we noted in this preview article from 2020, the new Bolt EUV will be the first Chevy to offer Super Cruse hands-free driving capability. Another interesting feature of these GM EV twins is that the price keeps dropping. The EUV is already expected to drop by a whopping $6,300 for 2023 and the smaller Bolt will follow suit after already doing so between 2021 and 2022 as we discuss here. While reducing cost-to-entry is certainly one way to get customers in the door, the 2022 Bolt EUV is actually a strong performer on its own in the burgeoning EV market.

2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV Powertrain

Both 2022 Bolt EUV trim lines feature a single permanent-magnet drive motor powering the front wheels via direct-drive transmission. A 65.0 kWh battery pack, with 288 lithium-ion cells, provides the juice to get this relatively light – about 3,700 lbs – SUV-ish vehicle up to 60 mph in 7.0 seconds, per Chevy. Ultium, the battery platform we review here, is the foundation of all this technology.

Power output is rated at 200-hp and 266 lb-ft of torque, all of which is controlled by a button and switch cabin interface that does away with traditional shift levers. Along with selectable Normal and Sport drive modes, one of those buttons enables one-pedal driving. This slick system lets the driver speed up by depressing the accelerator and slow down by lifting off. It can bring the Bolt to a complete stop, all without touching the brakes – though they are of course necessary in emergency situations. It is all part of the regenerative braking system, the intensity of which is controlled with a steering wheel-mounted paddle.

The 2022 Bolt EUV rides on an independent MacPherson strut front suspension with torsion beams out back. Thanks to a low center of gravity provided by the 947-pound battery pack, you can expect planted handling, but this is an EV designed for efficiency, not the race track.

EPA estimates put total range of the 2022 Bolt EUV at 247 miles, easily besting the 215 miles found in a top-spec Nissan Leaf as we look at in this comparison. Charging rate ranges from 4 miles per hour on 120 volts to 25 miles in an hour on typical 240-volt power. It is also DC fast-charging capable, a setup that should pour 95 miles of range into the battery in a half hour. All new Bolt EUV purchases are eligible for a complimentary Level 2 home charging installation, which is quite nice. City efficiency is rated at 125 MPGe, which drops to 104 MPGe on the highway.

Interior, Comfort, & Cargo Space

Though the Bolt EUV is six inches longer with a 3-inch longer wheelbase versus the smaller Bolt EV on which it is based, it actually has 0.3 fewer cubic feet of storage volume behind the front seat. That measurement is still 57 cubes, with the back seat folded, which is nearly twice what you’ll find in a Nissan Leaf. The Bolt also has a false cargo floor allowing for small hidden storage out back.

What it lacks in max cargo volume, the Bolt EUV makes up for in rear legroom. At 39 inches, it has three extra inches of stretch out space versus the regular Bolt. On the comfort side, leather is included on Premier models along with climatized front seats and heated rear outboard positions. And when its exceptionally hot or cold outside, the remote start feature comes with a cabin pre-conditioning system that allows you to get the inside air temperature warming up or cooling down before you get in. The same goes for the seat cushions and available heated steering wheel.

Cleanly integrated into the center stack, you’ll find a 10.2-inch infotainment touchscreen on both 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV models. Wireless connection for Apple and Android smartphone mirroring is baked in, as are a host of EV-focused graphical representations like estimated range based on conditions, real-time power being drawn, and more. The gauge cluster is a configurable digital 8-inch screen, wireless phone charging is standard, and a 7-speaker premium stereo from Bose is available. Other notable tech highlights include a rearview mirror that can display a live feed of what’s out back and an illuminated charge port, the latter of which can only be found with the Launch Edition package.

Safety Features

Every 2022 Bolt EUV comes with 10 airbags and a host of advanced safety systems like forward collision mitigation, lane keeping assist, and automatic high beams, but the claim to fame here is Super Cruise. This $2,200 option makes the new Bolt EUV the first Chevy on sale with this impressive hands-free driving software. Compatible with some 200,000 miles of US roadways, Super Cruise works with a driver attention monitor and basket of sensors to drive for you. A 3-year trial subscription to this tech is included with purchase.

Premier – $38,995

The top-spec Premier trim adds chrome and gloss black exterior bits plus perforated leather seats. Standard heated front seats add ventilation here, and the rear seat picks up outboard heating elements. Premier models bolster the list of advanced driver-aids with Adaptive Cruise Control and Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert. Ringing in at $5,430, the Launch Edition package tacks on Super Cruise, a dual-panel panoramic sunroof, connected navigation, and Bose audio system.

Warranties

Chevy’s vehicle and powertrain warranty is good for a 3-year/36,000-mile and 5-year/60,000-mile term, respectively. The battery system is covered for eight years or 100,000 miles. There is also a 5-year or 60,000-mile term on roadside assistance. While Chevy includes one complimentary maintenance visit in the first year of ownership, Hyundai includes factory-scheduled maintenance for three years.

What we think

As the electric vehicle competition heats up, this 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV looks poised for success thanks to an ample 250-mile range, useful one-pedal driving, the latest infotainment tech, and cutting-edge goodies like Super Cruise. It’s battery-powered chassis means it is eligible for HOV driving in some states along with tax and utility incentives. All good things. Seemingly the biggest hurdle for the 2022 model is its future self – the 2023 model is going to be more than $6,000 less to buy. That doesn’t diminish the inherent goodness of this Chevy of course. I would be happy with the sub-$35,000 LT trim that includes all the powertrain bits and a fair amount of useful infotainment.
